For several decades, college soccer has been a home to the country’s top goalkeepers. Although some schools have come and gone, being named the best goalkeeper in the country at the collegiate level will always be a prestigious award, no matter what year it was given. Below is a record of the top collegiate goalkeepers since 1905, as compiled to the best of our ability.
Accurate information on the history of the college game isn’t always readily available, if not lost outright over the decades. Considering the past limitations, some gaps have been filled in to best represent each era. Most notably, men’s teams listed as runner-ups before 1959 were selected by Everybody Soccer, as well as men’s teams listed as the top four seeded before 1988. Additionally, there were no national champions selected from 1941-1945, so a top four (and national champion) was also selected by Everybody Soccer prior to 1959.
On the women’s side, teams listed as the top four seeded before 1986 were selected by Everybody Soccer to showcase the top teams entering the tournament, as there isn't any verification of seeds given during this time. Lastly, as Everybody Soccer has been highlighting the country’s top goalkeepers for over a decade, Everybody Soccer’s own top goalkeepers are listed as well, following as a spiritual successor to the ISAA Goalkeeper of the Year award, which ran from the mid-1980s until 1995.
