8 Goalkeepers We Could See in the USL Super League

The US enters a new era this fall with another division one league kicking up its inaugural season. The USL Super League will feature eight teams, with nine rumored expansion sides in future seasons. The new league has talked boldly about its future but it will need to set a high standard of bringing in serious talent to accomplish this. Here are eight goalkeepers who would be up to the task.

1. Catalina Perez, 29

After a strong showing at the 2023 World Cup, Perez is still unfortunately looking for a club team to champion as their starter. The Colombian goalkeeper has struggled to catch on overseas, currently with her fifth club in as many years. For teams looking for a talented and tested veteran, Perez would be a perfect pick. (Highlights)

2. Bridgette Skiba, 24

Skiba finished playing for Oregon State in 2021 and originally had a good first spell with Koge, finishing third in the Danish Women's League. However, she’s been relegated to the bench this season after her 3-1 victory over KI in Champions League play. Skiba has immense athleticism to help any professional side but could use a restart to her career. (Highlights)

3. Sham Khamis - 29

The 29-year-old Australian has bounced around the continent, both in the W-League and their second division (National Premier Leagues NSW). Although her window to join the national team is closing, Khamis has a scrappy approach to the game that attracts new buyers to bring her into their setup. For a league looking for players to handle an inaugural season that will inevitably bring bumps in the road, Khamis would be a great addition to bring in.

4. Makenna Gottschalk - 25

New Mexico State isn’t normally known for producing professional goalkeepers but Makenna Gottschalk has been plying her trade for Torreense this season. The midtable Portuguese club has struggled offensively, giving Gottschalk plenty of chances to showcase her talents. Gottschalk utilizes her mobility to cover the goal through extension saves and scrambles in the box. (Highlights)

5. Annalee Grove -22

Grove is in her third year as a starter in Australia’s W-League and is ready for a step up to the next level. Grove has already added international playing time to her resume with the Aussie U19s and has a realistic shot at a top, top league. For a goalkeeper looking to challenge for Australia’s future number one, Grove could use the USL to help propel her to a top league. (Highlights)

6. Emily Dolan - 29

Dolan has carved out a career for herself in Europe since joining Italian club Zaccaria in 2017. After playing in three different countries (Italy, Poland, Spain), Dolan has hit a bit of a wall with playing time with Espanyol. Dolan is a very technical goalkeeper who would be a prime veteran to help kickstart a new American club. (Highlights)

7. Abbie Faingold - 27

Faingold has circled the globe in order to continue her professional career. The 27-year-old has spent time in Japan, Israel, France, and Cyprus with Champions League-side Apollon Limassol. Faingold has most recently repped California Storm, a semi-pro team here in the US. Although there won’t be a USL California-based team in 2024, Faingold has shown the determination to maintain a professional career and wouldn’t be a stranger to traveling once again for a starting spot. (Highlights)

8. Glo Hinojosa - 24

Hinojosa has a strong “bet on me” attitude that mirrors Lindsey Harris’ style of play. Despite the lack of height, Hinojosa and UC Irvine played spoiler to number-one seed UCLA in the 2023 tournament through her gritty, never-say-die approach. Oh, and the year before? Hinojosa led UC Irvine in another upset over USC in the 2022 tournament. As far as young Americans who have a track record of proving doubters wrong, Hinojosa tops the list. (Highlights)

Scouting Potential Foreign Goalkeepers for MLS (2024)

Following the previous report on potential signings for MLS, Everybody Soccer returns with another scouting report on possible foreign goalkeepers for MLS teams. The US’s top league has finally started to explore more avenues when it comes to buying and selling players, both domestic and foreign.

Eligible goalkeepers were limited to (1) being at least 21 years old, (2) listed as having less than a $1,250,000 market value by Transfermarkt, and (3) ones that would have the highest possibility of being re-sold by an MLS team. Additionally, information on their current club situation is provided beneath each picture, along with a brief bio about their play style and potential move to MLS.

Vitezslav Jaros (22) - Liverpool

Club: Liverpool (England.1)
(on loan with Sturm Graz, Austria.1)

Reported end of contract: June 30, 2024

Transfermarkt value: $317,000

Nationality: Czech Republic

The Czech youth international left Liverpool earlier this month on a recently loan out to Sturm Graz in Austria. With Alisson and Caoimhin Kelleher’s rise to success, Jaros has been left out in the cold and will likely be exploring new options when his contract reportedly runs out this summer. The lanky yet explosive young goalkeeper was previously getting a push within Liverpool and the current plateau is something he won’t want to let define him. Last summer, Jaros led Czech Republic’s U21s over Germany in a 2-1 win during the U-21 Euro, including a fantastic late-time save on a free kick.

Luca Philipp (23) - Hoffenheim

Club: Hoffenheim (Germany.1)

Reported end of contract: June 30, 2024

Transfermarkt value: $380,000

Nationality: Germany

After a decade with Hoffenheim, the former German U21 starter has still yet to be given a pathway forward. Philipp has been given a handful of starts over the last couple years but has seemingly dropped below 20-year-old teammate Nahuel Noll in terms of investment from the club. Philipp is long overdue a fresh start and given a consistent stream of games and MLS would match nicely with the German-style of goalkeeping: hyper-efficient and powerful shot-stopping with a modern tactical approach.

Markus Schubert (25) - Vitesse

Club: Vitesse (Netherlands.1)

Reported end of contract: June 30, 2024

Transfermarkt value: $380,000

Nationality: Germany

After a hapless couple years with FC Schalke, Schubert moved north for Vitesse on a free transfer. Schubert has helped the Dutch club progress in the KNVB Cup with back-to-back-to-back 1-0 wins, with the most recent victory coming earlier this week against AFC. Schubert has advanced Vitesse to the quarterfinals and could draw some attention but it’s unlikely it’ll be enough to raise his stock much higher than it already is. If Vitesse doesn’t have a pathway forward to him, MLS teams could utilize the former German YNT goalkeeper for a year or two.

Lennart Grill (25) - Union Berlin

Club: Union Berlin (Germany.1)
(on loan with VfL Osnabrück, Germany.2)

Reported end of contract: June 30, 2024

Transfermarkt value: $1,014,000

Nationality: Germany

Currently on loan with VfL Osnabrück, Grill has been cutting his teeth on one of the worst clubs in the German second division. Although Union Berlin may be able to see through the team’s failures for Grill’s individual efforts and higher ceiling, it’s likely he’ll get labeled as a relegated goalkeeper after this season, barring a mircle from VfL Osnabrück. And with both Frederik Rönnow and Alexander Schwolow back home at Union Berlin, there’s a decent chance Grill will be looking for a new home for the 2024-25 season.

Viljami Sinisalo (22) - Aston Villa

Club: Aston Villa (England.1)
(currently on loan to Exter City, England.3)

Reported end of contract: May 31, 2024

Transfermarkt value: $760,000

Nationality: Finland

Already with two caps to his name, the Finnish international finds himself in England’s third division after being sent out of loan from to Aston Villa. Unfortuantely for Sinisalo, Exter City are just earshot out of the relegation zone. Each match feels like a dogfight for Sinisalo, if not a one-sided stomp. Aston Villa will most certainly continue to run with Emi Martinez for another few years while Sinisalo will be chomping at the bit for serious minutes in a serious league. MLS has been a good home for many Finnish players - most notably Teemu Pukki - and could do wonders for Sinisalo’s next step.

Phillip Menzel (25) - A. Klagenfurt

Club: A. Klagenfurt (Austria.1)

Reported end of contract: June 30, 2024

Transfermarkt value: $887,000

Nationality: Germany

After a limited run with Wolfsburg, Menzel joined Austria Klagenfurt ahead of the 2020-21 season. Since then, Menzel has shown well in a league that is more about “keeping the ball out of the net” than playing on a field that allows for a smooth rolling of the ball. The grittiness of Austria’s Bundesliga has worked well for Menzel, earning over 100 appearances for the club and helping Klagenfurt earn promotion into the first division after his first season with the club. Klagenfurt now sits 5th overall, thanks largely to Menzel’s efforts. Not to take anything away from Menzel’s distribution skills but for MLS teams that are more focused on shot stopping, Menzel would be a great addition to their goalkeeping core, before potentially selling him back to the German Bundesliga.

Joan García (22) - Espanyol

Club: Espanyol (Spain.2)

Reported end of contract: June 30, 2028

Transfermarkt value: $507,000

Nationality: Spain

Admittedly, García’s contract situation will likely complicate a potential move. However, for a club that has gotten little to no use out of the former Spanish youth international (only seven appearances in the past twelve months), they may entertain a fair offer for the rarely seen goalkeeper. A few MLS teams are trying to possess more and although García is a fine shot-stopper in his own right, he could be the missing piece for those that want their goalkeeper to do more than just smash goal kicks downfield.

João Virgínia (24) - Everton

Club: Everton (England.1)

Reported end of contract: June 30, 2025

Transfermarkt value: $1,014,000

Nationality: Portugal

Virgínia first joined Everton in 2019 but it’s been a bumpy and winding road thus far. At just 24 years old, Virgínia has already completed his third loan (going to Reading, Sporting CP, and now SC Cambuur) while still barely featuring for Everton. At this point, Virgínia has made more appearances for Portuguese youth national teams than with Everton or their U23s and there doesn’t seem to be any plan for him to take over for Pickford (29 years old) any time soon. Everton may want to see what they can squeeze out of Virgínia at the end of the day - he admittedly played well in the FA Cup replay against Palace - but there’s a high likelihood that he walks for free in the end.

NCAA Men's Goalkeeper Rankings (Fall 2023)

Seniors

1. Kris Shakes (Penn State)
2. Ryan Schewe (Georgetown)
3. Lute Lillo Portero (Omaha, Spain)
4. Josue Hangi (Georgia State)
5. Bryan Dowd (Notre Dame)
6. Wessel Sprangers (Gonzaga, Netherlands)
7. Holden Brown (Virginia)
8. James Lowell (Maryland)
9. Clayton Knibbs (Connecticut)
10. John Harms (Indiana)

11. Sam Fowler (Washington)
12. Carter Abbott (Fordham)
13. Lorenzo Gordon (American)
14. Finn Jurak (Oakland, Australia)
15. Matt Zambetti (UMass)
16. Justin Siegel (Cal Poly)
17. Eoin Gawronski (Long Island)
18. Spencer Catalano (Canisius)
19. Harry Townsend (Missouri State, England)
20. Edmond Kaiser (Stony Brook, Germany)

One to Watch: Josue Hangi. Hangi started his collegiate career at Akron before transferring to Georgia State, where it took until his senior season to finally be named the number one. The Atlanta United product plays like a goalkeeper who has sat for three years: intense but raw at times. His handling isn’t the best and 1v1 approaches are more hopeful than methodical. However, Hangi plays with a level of intensity that embodies the “bet on yourself” and “play like there’s no tomorrow” mantras, which produces saves you simply don’t expect collegiate goalkeepers to pull off. Although the work needed to polish Hangi’s rough edges may scare off some professional sides, the clear upside will likely grab significant attention from sides that want a collegiate goalkeeper who can still develop, not just plateau at the next stage.

Juniors

1. Edu Rodriguez (Rhode Island, Spain)
2. Nathanael Sallah (Omaha, Germany)
3. Will Watson (Princeton)
4. Trace Alphin (Wake Forest)
5. Khamari Hadaway (Princeton)
6. Marc Kouadio (East Tennessee State, Canada)
7. Nate Crockford (Wisconsin)
8. Blake Franzen (Liberty, South Africa)
9. Griffin Huff (Lafayette)
10. Grant Calvert (Belmont)

One to Watch: Will Watson / Khamari Hadaway. What a fun goalkeeping duo. Watson certainly carries the edge in prestige, hailing from FC Dallas’ academy. However, Hadaway - a three-time high school All-American, to be fair - earned the bulk of the starts this year. Watson and Hadaway mirror the common two-goalkeepers-struggling-for-time trope: one is more crafted and consistent (Watson) while the other has the ability to make a legit game-saving moment but is less predictable in performance (Hadaway). There’s likely not a great scenario to leave both goalkeepers happy heading into 2024, as both have shown the ability to play at the level. With Princeton notching their first losing season since 2013 this past fall, neither goalkeeper really has standing to hold down the number one spot but as to how this plays out is anyone’s guess.

Sophomores

1. Jay Hibbert (Connecticut)
2. Logan Erb (San Diego State)
3. Andrew Cordes (North Carolina)
4. Casper Mols (Kentucky, Denmark)
5. Rowan Schnebly (Stanford)
6. Nic Lemen (Northern Kentucky)
7. Alec McLachlan (St. John's, England)
8. Gavin Roberts (Lindenwood)
9. Cabral Carter (Pittsburgh)
10. Jonathan Kliewer (Missouri State)

One to Watch: Logan Erb. Erb had some big shoes to fill after replacing MLS-drafted Jacob Castro and the Dynamo alum did not disappoint. The true sophomore feels akin to a snowball atop a hill: aiming for bigger things but the ultimate ceiling is tough to pin down. Erb is clearly eyeing a professional career but he’ll want to take heed to Castro’s over-reliance on improving a tense moment in the box, which has made the transition to the pro game all the more difficult. At times, Erb looks a little carefree with his movement and footwork, possibly leaning towards the same road Castro ventured down. To pull advice from another sport, Pete Rose told baseball hitters to never change their swing when reaching the pros and the same wisdom can be given to Erb: rely on what’s worked and maintain your blueprint.

Freshmen

1. Julian Eyestone (Duke)
2. Wyatt Nelson (UCLA)
3. Justin Stewart (High Point)
4. Aidan Crawford (Loyola-Chicago)
5. Bennet Glinder (Siena, Germany)
6. Jonathan Munteanu (UAB)
7. Patrick Schott (Belmont, Germany)
8. Seth Wilson (Akron)
9. Jakub Grzesiak (Oral Roberts, Poland)
10. Aaron Salinas (Furman)

One to Watch: Julian Eyestone. Wow, what a class. Every American goalkeeper here has the talent to get to the professional level with the internationals only bolstering the talent level even higher. Eyestone is one of the more obvious “fits the part” college products. The 6’6” FC Dallas prospect will almost certainly not stay at Duke for four years (but if Mark Dodd could do it, perhaps Eyestone can too). And with the rumors of the MLS draft starting to open up to underclassmen, keep an eye out for how few of these goalkeepers end up staying all four years, as the 2026 end-of-season rankings could have an entirely different set of names.
