The Most Iconic Goalkeeper Saves in World Cup History

Bill Reno February 18, 2025

FIFA fans are fondly looking back at the most iconic goalkeeper saves in World Cup history. The spectacular football matches from previous World Cup tournaments have been viewed by millions of people. World Cup saves by legendary goalkeepers have captivated global audiences in front of live crowds. These precious moments in football fixtures are prime reasons to watch the upcoming FIFA World Cup 26 for entertainment.

You can support your favorite national football team from 48 countries competing for the trophy. Goalkeepers play an important role on each team and try their best to smash the ball away from the goalpost. Strikers from top nations like Brazil, Argentina, and France, have made several attempts to get past goalkeepers to score goals that have won World Cup matches.

Iconic saves from Gordon Banks, Emiliano Martinez, and other goalkeepers have rescued their teams from losing on international stages. Goalkeepers have prevented forward players from evading defenders in the back of the football field on numerous occasions. The toughest attackers have been disappointed by amazing saves in World Cup games despite hitting a majority of shots on target.

Take a look at the most iconic goalkeeper saves in the history of FIFA World Cup.

Gordon Banks - 1970 FIFA World Cup

Gordon Banks is an English goalkeeper who has played professional football for more than 20 years in his career. The skills that Gordon Banks displayed for England during World Cup matches have been remembered throughout the history of football by his fans. Many people who have followed FIFA World Cup tournaments in the 1970s will definitely mention Gordon Banks stopping the Brazilian striker, Pele, from putting the ball in the back of the net.

England and Brazil had both qualified for the Group Stage of the 1970 FIFA World Cup. During the game, Jairzinho tackled England defenders to send the ball flying towards the goalpost. Pele took the chance to connect the cross from his Brazilian teammate, Jairzinho, with a mighty header. The English goalkeeper, Gordon Banks, reacted immediately to Pele’s attempt at scoring a goal in the 1970 FIFA World Cup match by pushing the ball over the crossbar.

Gordon Banks managed to save the goal from Pele, one of football’s greatest strikers of all time. Pele had scored 77 goals for Brazil but couldn’t pass through the guard of Gordon Banks in the international match. However, the persistent shots taken by Brazilian strikers in the 1970 FIFA World Cup led Brazil to a 1-0 victory over England.

Noel Valladares - 2010 FIFA World Cup

Noel Valladares is a goalkeeper from Honduras. He has appeared in 135 international matches for the Honduras national football team. Noel Valladares has been playing football since 1997 and became the third Honduran player with over 100 appearances. His watchful eyes on the goalpost led to Honduras qualifying for the 2010 FIFA World Cup that took place in South Africa.

Honduras played against Chile during the 2010 FIFA World Cup in the Group H stage. Noel Valladares left the stadium bewildered by diverting the ball at close range. Waldo Ponce, the Chilean defender, moved into the box region to take control of the ball after his team won a free kick in the game. Noel Valladares sled to the right of the goalpost and pushed the ball away with his hands, giving football fans a replay video that was watched thousands of times during the World Cup.

In recent days, these kinds of saves from international goalkeepers have been pivotal to winning sports bets online. Websites that allow sports betting on their digital platforms provide plenty of information such as, player’s performances, team stats, and previous records held by football stars. Sports betting on FIFA World Cup matches online has transformed into a reliable method of earning money and digital tokens for football fans.

In 2010, the Honduran national football team was impressed by Noel Valladares’s saves. He was named as the captain of his international team that year. Noel Valladares also won the Best Goalkeeper award at the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup for his ability to protect the nets.

Emiliano Martinez - 2022 FIFA World Cup

Emiliano Martinez is among the best goalkeepers in the world. The Argentinian goalkeeper made his international debut for his national football team in the 2022 FIFA World Cup. His outstanding save for Argentina in extra time against French forward player Randal Kolo Muani could be the most memorable moment in football history.

Randal Kolo Muani had one last chance to score a goal for France in the 123rd minute of the 2022 FIFA World Cup finals match. Kylian Mbappé, the French striker, had scored 3 goals in the finals to draw the score 3-3 with Argentina. His teammate, Randal Kolo Muani, failed to score a goal for France due to Emiliano Martinez shoving the ball away during injury time.

Forced into penalty shootouts, Emiliano Martinez saved the day for Argentina by giving his team a 4-2 victory over France. He also won the Golden Glove award for his astonishing performance in the finals. You can watch highlights of the 2022 FIFA World Cup finals to relive the magic of Emiliano Martinez’s saves with your friends.
